Yayoi Kusama's Works Exhibition Sparks Art Fever Tips for Investing in Art

November 10, 2022

The special exhibition "Yayoi Kusama: 1945 to the Present" held by the M+ Museum will open this Saturday (12th), and it is believed that it will set off another art boom. In fact, art is also a kind of investment. If you know the trick, in addition to appreciation, the potential return can also be very attractive.

Dots and nets are the Yayoi Kusama logo

Known as the Queen of Polka Dots, Yayoi Kusama, who turns 93 this year, is a pivotal Asian artist in the history of contemporary art, and was selected by the American art website My Morden Met as one of the "Top Ten Avant-Garde Artists of the 21st Century". Dots and meshes are the hallmark features of Kusama's works, and can be found in most of his works.

The Yayoi Kusama exhibition will be held from November 12 this year to May 14, 2023, with more than 203 works on display, covering paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, archives and other media. The retrospective is chronological and thematic, from paintings created at the end of World War II to her most recent immersive works, revolving around "infinity", "accumulation", "full connection", "biological universe", "death" and The six themes of "The Power of Life" comprehensively present the development stages of Kusama's artistic career, including the first exhibition of 11 works of the "Pray for Love Every Day" series that she created while on the sickbed in recent years, hoping to give positive strength to the people of Hong Kong. Faced with the anxiety caused by the epidemic.

Investing in art requires patience

When it comes to art investment, you must first be patient, because the potential of art may be high, but it will take a long time to reflect, especially if the investment has just emerged in artist works. In addition, you must have a mentality to invest only if you like it, rather than buying it and waiting for appreciation. This attitude is very important.

Artists are roughly divided into three categories: master artists like Picasso, most of which are collected in art museums; second, well-known artists such as Yayoi Kusama, who have auction records in the second-hand market; third, emerging or emerging artists , the works are only traded in the first-hand market, and there is no auction record.

The works of top masters have a high probability of long-term appreciation, and most of them are no longer alive, and there will be no new creations. There is an auction market for the works of well-known artists, and the price can range from tens of thousands to few millions US dollar. If they are still creating, the new works and behaviors of the artists will have the opportunity to affect the old works, and the entry threshold is not low. However, if the financial strength is stronger, you should buy the more famous works of well-known artists, which is close to the potential blue-chip.

As a beginner, it will be easier to find treasures if you choose some artists with agents. Since the agent will package the artist, the potential for future emergence is high. Of course, the originality and style of the artist's works have potential, and it is best to do your own research, or it is easier to pick the award as a market knowledge. This allows you to buy original genuine products at a lower price in the beginning. However, the risks are also high.

Limited Edition Giclee Prints are the option

If you plan to invest a small amount of money, you may want to start by collecting Giclee, but limited edition prints or photographs. Prints are divided into original prints and reproduction prints authorized by the artist to reproduce his well-known works. Original prints are created by the artist himself, signed by the artist himself, marked with a limited number, and are original works with originality. There is a strict limit on the number of prints that can be printed. The smaller the number, the more precious it is. Generally, a printmaker will destroy the original after printing a limited number of works.

Most of the reproduction prints are authorized by a third party, and most of them are limited, but they are always reproductions and are less valuable than the original prints.

For example, Yayoi Kusama's prints of pumpkins (Yellow Y) were estimated at Sotheby's at about US dollars 20,000 to 30,000 so the prints have both value and auction price.
